Biography

Pianist ZHANG Yue, Grotrian Artist, is currently serving as Assistant Professor (Teaching) of Piano & Keyboard at the School of Music, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen.

As an active soloist, ZHANG has performed all over the world in prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall in New York, Sala Cecilia Meireles in Rio de Janeiro, Lithuanian National Philharmonic Hall in Vilnius, Vienna Concert Hall, Salle Bourgie in Montreal, Hong Kong City Hall, Shenzhen Concert Hall, and Theater Verdi in Pordenone, Italy. ZHANG has collaborated with the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra, Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra, Hong Kong Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra, etc., and has appeared with conductor Shu-cheng Shi, Daye Lin, Modestas Pitrėnas, among others. He has also appeared as a guest artist playing with famous musicians, including Soprano Liping ZHANG, Grammy Award violist Richard Yongjae O'Neill, violinist Jin Wang, and cellist Richard Bamping.

In 2022, he was invited to participate in the grand opening concert of the HKGNA Music Festival at Victoria Harbour and shared the stage with iconic soprano Sumi Jo, which was broadcast globally. In the same year, he was invited to play at the Beijing press conference for "12 Piano Preludes" commissioned by Professor Xiaogang YE, chairman of the China Musicians Association. In 2024, ZHANG participated in the CUHK-Shenzhen School of Music's first-ever European tour to Austria.

Maestro Dang Thai Son praised him, "This young, gifted pianist possesses the highest level of professionalism, culture, noble taste, and artistry." Director of the KNS label acclaimed him, "His deep feeling for the colors, harmony, and structure together with a great dose of creativity and fantasy make ZHANG an exceptional artist."

ZHANG has won the 1st Prize at the 2019 Chautauqua Piano Competition, Grand Prize at the 2014 HKGNA Music Competition, and Award of "Wenhua Prize" at the First National Piano competition "Wenhua cup" held by the Ministry of Culture of China, etc. He is the awardee of the Talent Development Scholarship from the HKSAR Government. As a guest artist, he has been invited to participate in many famous international music festivals, including the Beijing Modern Music Festival, Piano Summer Festival in HKAPA, Chautauqua Festival, Piano Texas, HKGNA Music Festival, etc.

As a recording Artist, ZHANG's CD "Hong Kong Marathon" was recorded live by Italian label Movimento Classical; his new solo recording album "Ethereal Echoes" was globally released by KNS Label, featuring four scherzos by Chopin as well as traditional and contemporary classical Chinese works. ZHANG's performances have been broadcast and reported by Italian radio Rai 3, RTHK 4 Hong Kong, SinoTV, Shenzhen TV, Sing Tao Daily, and other media. The next album will be released under the NCPA Classics label.

ZHANG has also been actively involved in piano education. He previously taught at the Université de Montréal in Canada and has been invited to serve as a judge for numerous competitions, including the Grotrian International Piano Competition, the KAWAI Asia Piano Competition, the Hong Kong HKGNA International Music Competition, the China Youth Music Competition—Hummingbird Music Awards, and the GBAMS Music Awards of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Music Season for "The Hundred, Thousand, Ten Thousand" etc. His students have also received awards in numerous competitions.

ZHANG completed his Bachelor's and Master's degrees (with Distinction) at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts under the tutelage of leading piano educator Gabriel Kwok. He obtained his Doctorate of Music in Piano performance at the University of Montreal under the tutelage of Maestro Dang Thai Son.
