Biography

Yuhan NIU, organist, is currently serving as Lecturer at the School of Music, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Recording Arts from the Communication University of China; a Bachelor of Science in Music Industry and a Master of Music in Organ Performance (full scholarship) from the University of Southern California (USC), Thornton School of Music. In June 2023, she completed her Konzertexamen in Organ with the highest honors, "Summa cum Laude" at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg, Germany.

Ms. NIU studied Recording Arts at the Communication University of China from 2010 to 2014, during which she received the National Scholarship. She has participated in numerous recording projects at the Central Conservatory of Music, Beijing Concert Hall, and the China National Center for the Performing Arts.

In 2013, Ms. NIU began studying Music Industry with an emphasis on Music Technology at USC, developing a specialization in recording pipe organs. She has recorded various notable instruments, including the Great Organ of the First Congregational Church of Los Angeles (one of the largest church organs in the world) and the organ of St. Paul's Episcopal Cathedral, San Diego. Inspired by these recording sessions, Ms. NIU expanded her interest to the organ performance. She began studying the instrument at USC with Dr. Ladd Thomas, Dr. Weicheng Zhao, and Prof. Cherry Rhodes. She has since given recitals at venues such as the Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Assumption in San Francisco, the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Los Angeles, and the St. Paul Episcopal Cathedral in San Diego. From 2017 to 2020, she served as the Music Director and Organist at Gethsemane Lutheran Church in La Crescenta, where she organized music programs and conducted the church choir.

In 2020, Ms. NIU moved to Germany to study with Prof. Wolfgang Zerer and Prof. Matthias Neumann at Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg. As a concert organist, she has performed throughout Germany. Highlights of her concert engagements include solo recitals at Klosterkirche Fürstenfeld, Bayern, the Schöneberger Orgelzyklus in Berlin, VerdenDom, the Lüneburg Orgelsommer at St. Nikolai Kirche Lüneburg, and Podium der Jungen in Hauptkirche St. Jacobi, Hamburg. Ms. NIU studied harpsichord with Dr. Lucinda Carver and Menno van Delft. She is also active as a continuo player in chamber ensembles, with a focus on recorder repertoire ranging from the Renaissance to the early Baroque era. Additionally, she has participated in major choral works concerts with choir and orchestra, including a performance of Lili Boulanger's Psalm 130 for Choir and Orchestra at the Laeiszhalle in Hamburg. Ms. NIU is the recipient of the 2023 DAAD Prize for International Students and Doctoral Candidates (Preis für Internationale Studierende und Doktoranden).
