Biography

REN Shengzhi, serving as Lecturer at the School of Music, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, is an established opera singer. He was awarded as a Scottish Opera Emerging Artist (2020/21) after completing the Young Artist Programme (2019/20) at the National Opera Studio. From 2017 to 2019, he was awarded a full scholarship and the Porter Fund Award by the Royal Academy of Music, where he obtained the Advanced Diploma. He was trained at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music in China, where he graduated with bachelor's and master's degrees with honours.

His competition awards include: Third Prize and Audience Award at the Neapolitan Masters Competition 2019 (Italy); First Prizes at the Golden Bell Awards 2015 (Hunan, China) and 2009 (Jiangxi, China); First Prize at International Opera Competition 2010 (Hong Kong, China); and First Prize at the International Singing Contest for Young Singers 2006 (Macao, China).

Shengzhi performed the title role in Oedipus Rex at the Edinburgh International Festival (2024), receiving high praise from both the audience and critics. He also portrayed the Song Seller in Il tabarro at the BBC Proms (2022). His other solo performance highlights include: Carmina Burana with Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, the celebration ceremony of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the UK, the lunchtime recitals of National Opera Studio in London, the London Bel Canto Festival Concert, and the Academy Voices concert at the Italian Cultural Institute. In 2017, Shengzhi represented Chinese artists and performed as a soloist at the Korea-China Cultural Exchange Gala.

His opera appearances include Oedipus in Oedipus Rex by Stravinsky and Jean Cocteau, Alfredo in La Traviata (access show), Leukippos in Daphne by Strauss at the Lammermuir Festival, De Clerval in Thérèse by Massenet, Froh in Das Rheingold, Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni, Fenton in Falstaff, Nemorino in L'elisir d'amore, and Ferrando in Così fan tutte for Opera Online. L'elisir d'amore and Così fan tutte were recorded and published by Scottish Opera.

His operatic engagements include Vaudémont of Iolanta, Don Jose of La tragedie de Carmen (Royal Academy Opera), Tamino of The Magic Flute (Shanghai Converter of Music, China), Borsa of Rigoletto (Shanghai Grand Theatre, China), Prince of Cinderella (Opera North Concert) and Rodolfo of La Bohème (Welsh National Opera Concert).

Shengzhi has been actively engaged in promoting Opera's outreach. Activities include the performance showcase at Wells Cathedral School, the performance at the University of Cambridge Trinity College Dinner, and the production of a Chinese-English bilingual art song for educational purposes, which was recorded and published by Scottish Opera.
