Abstract

The "vocal impulse" (顿挫, the sharp turning point in the singer's voice performance) and the intimate interaction between the instrumental parts construct the "inherent logical practice" in the music style of Quanzhou Nanyin, which is a representational traditional music genre in southern Fujian Province, China, and has become one of the Intangible Cultural Heritages of UNESCO since 2009, and play a crucial role in the Nanyin musicians' cultural-musical identity. Nowadays, the contemporary compositional practices, including the "new-Nanyin" pieces and the "non-Nanyin" compositions transforming the Nanyin musical elements to improve their characteristic compositional consciousness, have plural points of view to confront and treat the musical or cultural elements of Nanyin, to be integrated in different positions with the contemporary society. The main concern of this lecture will be: "how" or "if" the inherent logical practice of Nanyin works in the mentioned compositional practices, how the "Nanyin style" is acknowledged and interpreted by the composers from different cultural backgrounds (as "insider" or "outsider" to Nanyin), and, how they transform or cut-and-paste the Nanyin character in their music.

About the Speaker

Prof. Chung-Yuan Yu

Chung-Yuan Yu, born in Taipei City (China) in 1984, obtained a bachelor's degree from the music department of Taiwan Normal University in 2007 and an artistic diploma from the University of Art Berlin (UdK Berlin) in 2015. After studying composition with Prof. Gordon Shi-Wen Chin, Prof. Walter Zimmermann, Marc Sabat, and Anton Safronov, now a doctoral student of the Central Conservatory, Chung-Yuan Yu is extending the composition study with Prof. Wenjing Guo. Since 2016, he has been teaching at Quanzhou Normal University as an associate professor and advisor of composition postgraduate students. Through his experiences in Quanzhou, he has been staying in a proper position to observe Nanyin's performance and cultural environment. In recent years, he has been composing numeral vocal or instrumental compositions with the elements of Nanyin's vocalization, like While the Wind Suddenly Rises for string quartet, Song Valley for orchestra, Mei Luo for mixed choir, Tse-Gong-Liu for female choir and Walking Horse? Flying Horse! for Huqin quartet and piano.
