A countertenor is a type of classical male singing voice whose vocal range is equivalent to that of the female contralto or mezzo-soprano voice types. The voice is pure and ethereal, almost like a voice of an angel. During the Renaissance and the Enlightenment, the countertenor was very popular in religious dramas and baroque operas. But during the Romantic period, it disappeared for a while. Since the second half of the 20th century, under the promotion of the Historically informed performance movement, a new generation of countertenor singers have naturally sung the classical music with the help of voice training methods handed down from the Middle Ages.

The School of Music, CUHK-Shenzhen was officially established in August 2021. Currently, we are organizing a series of events to commemorate the 2nd anniversary of the School. On May 14, we invite the acclaimed Israeli countertenor David Feldman and Prof. Michael Tsalka to lead the audiences through a fascinating musical journey, exploring the countertenor repertoire: from the Renaissance airs of English composers such as John Dowland, to the Baroque operas of Vivaldi and Handel, then proceeding to a different world: Vienna, during the turn of the Twentieth Century. Looking forward to taking you on a unique journey of musical adventure!
