Gruppo Ocarinistico Budriese
Born in 1853 in Bologna, Italy, the Gruppo Ocarinistico Budriese (GOB) Ocarina Septet stands as the progenitor of ensemble ocarina artistry worldwide. Through the intricate interplay of seven distinct voices, this ensemble has woven a 170-year musical legacy. Recognized as a national treasure of Italy, GOB not only serves as the permanent jury for international ocarina competitions but is spearheaded by Professor Emiliano—the first artist appointed as an ocarina professor at Bologna Conservatory—who guides the ensemble in delivering definitive ocarina artistry.
The ocarina was introduced to Budrio, a small town near Bologna, by Giuseppe Donati in 1853. A decade later, in 1863, he successfully crafted five ocarinas in different keys and established the first ocarina ensemble. Expanding to a septet after 1870, the group achieved continental acclaim the following year through performances of original works and operatic arias across Europe. With over 1,000 concerts spanning Italy and international stages, GOB has produced numerous CD/DVD recordings.
Their global tours cover countries including Australia (1987, 1996, 2000); Cuba (1989); Argentina (1990); Chile (1990, 1999); Venezuela (1991); United States (1994); South Korea (2010, 2012, 2014); China (2014, featuring a landmark performance at Beijing's National Centre for the Performing Arts); Japan (2014, 2015, 2018, 2019, 2023), as well as extensive European engagements.
Recent concerts include broadcasts on Radio 3 (2014), RSI (Radio della Svizzera Italiana) (2014), and Germany's WDR (2015). The ensemble has graced prestigious platforms, such as the Ravello Festival (2019) and Macerata's Sferisterio for Musicultura (2020). Marking their global reach, GOB embarked on its sixth Japanese tour from August to September in 2024, presenting 23 concerts at the country's most revered concert hall.
