Composer, clarinettist and conductor Jörg Widmann regards Mendelssohn as one of the greats of music. And he sees parallels with his own works, especially the “fascination with speed, instrumental colours and fast-paced changes of mood in quick succession”. He conducts Mendelssohn’s majestic “Reformation” Symphony and works of his own: his Overture Con brio, the Fantasy for Clarinet and the Second Violin Concerto, with his sister Carolin Widmann. (P.S. The esteemed Chamber Orchestra of Europe continue their celebrated residency at the historic Esterhazy Palace in Eisenstadt, Austria, launching the 2023 Herbstgold ("Autumn Gold") Festival. This year's festival is devoted to the human experience of longing—whether for romantic love, a place to call home, or peace during tumultuous times. The great Julian Rachlin kicks off the program in the solo role of Prokofiev's unsettling Violin Concerto No. 2 in G minor, written in 1935 while the composer prepared to return to Stalinist Russia after years living in America and France. With Rachlin now conducting, the COE then perform the Overture from Glinka's Ruslan and Lyudmila, which follows Ruslan's quest to find his kidnapped beloved, and Tchaikovsky's powerful Fifth Symphony, evocative of a mighty struggle against fate that ultimately ends in triumph—a perfect accompaniment to the heady mix of emotions we often feel as the seasons change.

The OPRL begin their orchestral season with Beethoven's stirring Egmont Overture, a rousing battle cry against oppression composed soon after the Fifth Symphony. The enchanting Holloway, who recently won acclaim for playing the title role in Franck's Hulda, then takes the stage to perform Wagner's celebrated Wesendonck Lieder, five passionate songs composed during the creation of Tristan und Isolde and based on the poetry of Mathilde Wesendonck, the wife of one of Wagner's wealthy patrons with whom the composer was infatuated. Finally, maestro Madaras leads the ensemble in Mahler's First Symphony ("Titan"), a captivating musical mosaic that expertly mixes brass fanfares, Bohemian motifs, klezmer influences, and even an uncanny nod to "Frere Jacques"…

The prestigious Chamber Orchestra of Europe continue their celebrated residence at the world-renowned Esterházy Palace in Eisenstadt, Austria, joined at this Herbstgold Festival concert by conductor Maxim Emelyanychev and soprano Lucy Crowe!
In 1761, Haydn entered the service of the powerful and wealthy Esterházy family. Over the more than 30 years that he spent with them, he composed over 100 symphonies (amply earning the moniker "Father of the Symphony"!), one of which begins this festive evening: the Symphony No. 90 in C, full of Haydn's sparkling wit—including a fakeout ending near the close of the finale. Next, internationally acclaimed soprano Lucy Crowe takes the stage to perform gorgeous arias from two of Weber's operas, Oberon and Der Freischutz. And finally, maestro Emelyanychev leads the COE in Schubert's effervescent Symphony No. 3 in D, written when the composer was just 18.

A concert full of orchestral force: Karl Amadeus Hartmann’s Gesangsszene from Sodom and Gomorrah – composed in 1962/63 under the shadow of the arms race between the superpowers – outlines a vision of the end of the world. Kirill Petrenko presents the powerful work with baritone Christian Gerhaher. Also dramatic are Iannis Xenakis’s Jonchaies and György Kurtág’s Stele. The world premiere of a new work by Martón Illés will be heard as well.
