A hero, malevolent adversaries and a faithful companion – they all appear in Richard Strauss’s Ein Heldenleben (A Hero’s Life). The work, in which Strauss draws parallels to his own life, dazzles listeners with sumptuous tonal splendour. Kirill Petrenko launches the 2023/24 season and the thematic focus “Heroes” with it. Also on the programme is Max Reger’s Mozart Variations. We will present a special accompanying programme 30 minutes before the concert begins.

In keeping with the season’s theme of identities, the Philharmonia Piano Trio presents three Czech composers who combined the cultivation of their national idiom with an openness to international influences: Dvořák was inspired by Ukrainian folk songs for his famous “Dumky Trio”. Slavic spirit also characterises the two works by Dvořák’s pupil and son-in-law Josef Suk. Bohuslav Martinů’s Trio No. 3 with its captivating rhythms is a homage to his Czech homeland.

Based on the drama Christ Recrucified by Nikos Kazantzakis, Martinů's four-act opera opens on an intriguing scene: a play is being rehearsed in a picturesque Greek village. Manolios (Sebastian Kohlhepp), Katerina (Sara Jakubiak), and Panait (Julian Hubbard) are chosen to perform the roles of Christ, Mary Magdalene, and Judas—but the tranquil community is soon thrown into turmoil by the arrival of a group of Greek refugees, who meet with suspicion at the hands of the villagers. Boundaries between fiction and reality begin to blur, and Manolios—like a new messianic figure—attempts to remind his fellow citizens of the importance of evangelical love, but tensions continue to rise… Under the expert baton of Maxime Pascal, the Vienna Philharmonic guides us on a fascinating journey, inviting us to reflect on the still-relevant contradictions raised by the libretto and highlighting the timeless qualities of Martinů's opera.

Brad Mehldau, "the most influential jazz pianist of the last 20 years" (New York Times), brings his celebrated trio together once more, joining forces with bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Jeff Ballard for an electrifying set at the 2023 Festival International de Jazz de Montréal! An artist of seemingly unlimited creative vision who blends aspects of jazz, pop, rock, and classical music, Mehldau has influenced artists across genres, showing with his own work—including reprises of contemporary songs by the Beatles, Cole Porter, Radiohead, Paul Simon, Gershwin, and more—that genre distinctions are never set in stone. His rapport with Grenadier and Ballard, developed over decades of celebrated performances and recordings, makes this one of the marquee events of the world's largest jazz festival, and appointment viewing for jazz fans everywhere.
